Australian Mining Job Search 2022

Are you looking for a mining job right now? In this month’s Mining People Poll, we want to know what the job search experience is like in 2022.

Are you looking for a mining job?

In this month’s Mining People Poll, we want to know what the job search experience is like for people looking for a mining job right now.

Labour shortage or fussy companies?

As a specialist mining industry agency, we’re always interested in what candidates have to say about their job search experience.

That’s especially true when the industry is experiencing a skills and labour shortage, as it currently is. For candidates, it can be very frustrating to hear that mining companies are desperate for workers, but then, when they apply, they can’t seem to land a job.

Despite the skills shortage, we hear from candidates who say they’ve been knocked back for roles because of their inexperience. We also hear from highly experienced candidates who fail to secure a mining job, and believe ageism is the reason.

In this month’s poll, we want to see how widespread those experiences really are. Does the data back up the anecdotes?

Time to move or time to train?

It’s also common to hear that there are plenty of mining job opportunities in residential mining towns, but candidates aren’t willing to move. Is that really true?

We often hear that mining companies, hit by the skills shortage, should be willing to employ enthusiastic inexperienced and unqualified candidates and train them up to do the jobs the company is struggling to fill. But are candidates willing to train?

A snapshot of the mining job search experience in 2022

Our hope is that this month’s Mining People Poll will give us a snapshot of the mining job search experience in 2022, at a time when the industry is experiencing a skills shortage.

We don’t have any preconceived ideas about what we’re going to learn. The questions we’re asking are based on the kinds of stories that regularly circulate around the industry and on the sorts of platforms where mining jobseekers talk.

In short, we want to take the temperature of the mining jobseeker market right now. Our hope is we can put some data behind the kind of chat, and feed that information back to the industry.

We’d love to hear about your experience. All answers are completely anonymous. The poll is open until the end of March. Keep an eye on the MPi Newsroom for the results in early April.
